10k Worth of Knowledge for Roughly 40 Bucks

October 25, 2008 - Posted by Shama Kabani, 2 Comments

By: Shama Hyder I attend a lot of conferences and expos on online marketing. It’s the ONLY way to keep up in this field! Become a sponge and soak it up. Just this past year, I spent roughly 10k on traveling and attending social media conferences and seminars. Sometimes I take notes and other times I just sit and absorb. Somehow, two colleagues I know took ALL the material on smart online marketing and made it applicable. If you didn’t attend a single learning event this year, don’t sweat it. Just get their books and you will be caught up as I am. NO kidding! I rarely brag about books to you guys because I read so much that at some point they all bleed together. Not so this time. I would be doing a great DISSERVICE if I didn’t share my thoughts on these two gems! Get Content, Get… read more

How to Make the MOST of a Talk Given

October 11, 2008 - Posted by Shama Kabani, 4 Comments

By: Shama Hyder For the past month, I have been buzzing around the US giving talks-on everything from online marketing to social media marketing. And, I have been noticing how the audience observes and interacts. There is a lot said about how to give a great talk, but I believe there is also merit in knowing HOW to make the MOST of a talk given. Here are my tips to make the most of any talk! 1) Don’t give advice unless you KNOW for a fact. This is a pet peeve of mine as a speaker. An audience member will ask a question and another will chime in with their two-bit. Often, with the wrong or partially correct answer. If you feel the speaker didn’t answer the question fully, talk to the person with the question later and offer your insight. 2) Walk away with 1 DO IT point. This… read more

Amazing BOA Steakhouse – Las Vegas

September 30, 2008 - Posted by Shama Kabani, 2 Comments

By: Shama Hyder This isn’t a restaurant review blog. But when a restaurant manages to combine my 2 two loves (food and marketing), I have to mention them. I was in Las Vegas last week for Blog World, when we decided to go celebrate with an extraordinary dinner. I LOVE the food in Vegas, and Boa Steakhouse (on top of Ceasar’s Palace) has been a favorite since I dined there last year. This time (our 2nd trip), we let them know we were celebrating a special occasion and would appreciate a table outside. (The view is BREATHTAKING!) We were promptly seated outside, and the waiter bought out an appetizer and glasses of champagne on the house. Since I don’t drink, we nixed the champage but devoured the potato fingers (?). Now, I was beginning to feel like royalty! They didn’t even know I was a blogger ; ). We continued… read more

By: Shama Hyder 1) A full house can boost your confidence. I love speaking about topics I am passionate about- online marketing, social media, community building, but a room full of twitterers can make the best of them feel a little nervous. One wrong move and it’s cyber tomatoes for you. I never thought a full room could boost your confidence. There had been a mix up on the schedule (I was double booked for a panel and my talk on Facebook!), so I wasn’t expecting many people at all. I was truly gateful and humbled when I saw people sitting on the floor with their laptops and standing by the door. At that moment, I realized that I couldn’t let the crowd down. I couldn’t afford to be nervous! I had to give them a presentation that would make standing at back of the room for an hour worth… read more

7 Surprising Facts About Online Video…And 3 Ways You Can Profit From Them

September 11, 2008 - Posted by Shama Kabani, 10 Comments

By: Dave Kaminski photo credit: sorosh It seems every time you turn around these days, people are saying you must start using online video if you want to succeed on the web. But is it really true…or…is it all just marketing hype? Well, thankfully the web gives us something not readily available in more traditional marketing mediums, like radio, print and TV; the ability to track high-level statistics in real-time. And by looking at these statistics, we can easily tell what’s hype and what’s reality when it comes to online video. Most of the available statistics come from the major players on the web….the large companies who place pre, mid and post roll ads in the videos many of us watch online. But are these statistics relevant to small business owners on the web? For the past 12 months I’ve tracked these statistics, comparing them against what’s being reported by… read more
