The New and Improved Facebook

In an attempt to make Facebook more business friendly and broaden demographics, the website has been taking notes from fellow social networking site, Twitter.

It has given itself a makeover with emphasis on the new “What’s on your mind?” feature. What used to be the space for a person’s “status” during the day, has become an area that one can put pretty much post whatever they’d like, and display whatever is “on their mind” at the time. This feature is very similar to Twitter’s entire concept, which is to post in 140 words or less “What are you doing?” In fact, Facebook’s wording allows for even broader responses.

Basically, it is a giant step toward expanding the purpose of Facebook entirely.

The original Facebook wasn’t so much about getting a response from your friend the second you posted something on their wall, or knowing exactly what he or she is doing every minute of the day. It was more about checking up on what they’ve been doing lately, and staying aware of any significant life changes like an engagement. Now, however, it is rapidly moving towards the idea of being constantly connected with people in your life, and staying updated on their every move.

After logging on to Facebook, you will find an explanation of what you’re looking at, and why your “News Feed” has changed. The site explains that you are looking at “a real-stream of posts from your friends and connections.” In other words, you will be updated on any action your friends make on Facebook at the exact time they do it. It actually is not much different from the “News Feed” we’ve become accustomed to, aside from the greater emphasis on “What’s on people’s minds,” which in itself, has the power to change Facebook. This minor change of wording hints at where Facebook is headed: to becoming the leading social networking site, and the only one you will need.

To further its efforts of becoming the sole social networking site, Facebook has introduced a new feature, which will make it easier to connect with people you otherwise wouldn’t know. “Public Profiles” is the newest addition to Facebook that gives users the option of making their profiles open for any Facebook member to view. This will allow users to connect and share with more people if they choose to do so. This is only an option, and no one will be forced to make their profile public. Facebook has always been adamant about allowing you to pick who sees your profile, what features they can view in your profile, and who can even search you on Facebook. Their privacy controls let you choose “exactly what you share with whom.”

Early adapters to this application will be mostly businesses. It will allow stakeholders and those who are just curious about the company to easily learn more about it, and it will offer a more personal touch than the company’s website can.

To make a profile public go to the profile privacy settings page and change any of the following setting to “Everyone”:
• Profile
• Status Updates
• Links
• Wall Posts
• Basic Info
• Personal Info
• Education Info
• Work Info
• Photos of You
• Videos of You

With the new set-up and growing features of Facebook, it is going to be hard for any other social networking site to keep up. By reaching out to businesses and older demographics, Facebook is becoming an online powerhouse that will be the one-stop spot for any of your social networking needs. SXSW 2009 In Bullet Points-

I just got back from SXSW 2009 earlier than planned. It was nice, but last year was better. Taking 3 days plus the weekend off is just too much for my time schedule right now.

Here is a recap in bullet points (fresh from my memory!) -

  • 30% more attendance than last year. The blogger lounge was packed. No place to sit.
  • Lots more folks this year looking and networking for jobs. Fewer startups.
  • The “shwag” (free stuff at conferences that they give out) was seriously lacking.
  • You could sense that economy had altered the mood from last year. More somber.
  • How was the trade show? (A frequently asked question). In one word: Slow. Not as many startups, not as much energy as last year.
  • How were the panels? I only attended 3. Most people quickly realize that sessions isn’t where the real fun is (hint: it’s the lobby!). The first panel was on “Awesome Webisodes.” They talked about how hollywood and independent film makers are now leveraging the internet to build buzz. The second panel was Charlene Li’s “The Future of Social Networks.” You can see the whole presentation here. Main takeaway: You won’t have to keep adding friends to every new site in the future. The internet will know your friends and save them for you. Social networking will be MUCH smarter and integrated. A part of your life. The third panel was about comedy online. It had BJ Novak from the office. The panel was pretty funny (which is why I went), and also seemed to stress that online video is the next hot thing. I guess Shama.Tv was a smart move. = )
  • But, I didn’t get to go to SXSW. What can I do? If you didn’t get to go this year, don’t sweat it. You can get the information shared on panels and sessions online. Just find the person who spoke and follow their blog. You can also bet that MANY bloggers will be sharing what they learned. Most panelists will also put up their presentations on SlideShare. This is a great way to get the gist of the information. Network on Twitter. Start building relationships and plan to attend Blog World in October to connect face-to-face. Blog world is a more intimate version of SXSW.

Overall, I walked away with more meaningful relationships, some fun ideas, and 2 free t-shirts. = )

How to Leverage the Power of Drupal for Search Engine Optimization and Marketing

Drupal Background

Drupal is an open source content management system that was developed by Dries Buytaert in 2001. The original Drupal system was a simple message board, but was turned into a CMS (content management system) shortly afterwards.

Drupal works by having a core version (known as Drupal Core), which by itself is very powerful. What makes really makes Drupal shine, however, are the 3rd party add-ons (modules), which are contributed free-of-charge by Drupal’s extensive programming community. These modules allow you to do anything from adding a shopping cart to integrating 3rd party applications like Twitter and Facebook.


Who Uses Drupal?

Lots of companies and organizations use Drupal. I could sit here and give you examples like Amnesty International, Fast Company or even Pearl Jam, but really, when you get down to it the question becomes – why not use Drupal?

The problem with most content management systems is that they were built for a specific purpose – i.e. – creating a blog with WordPress. What’s great about the Drupal platform is that you get as close to working with a clean slate as you’ll probably ever get from a CMS.
With Drupal, your options are virtually limitless – from a simple brochure website, to a complex social network, or even an e-commerce platform.

And you can do it all with SEO and marketing friendly modules that help bring you more qualified, free Internet traffic.

Before going into some of the essential contributed modules that you have to have on your site to take full advantage of Drupal’s search capabilities, we’ll go over some of the modules that are built into Drupal’s core installation profile.

Drupal Core SEO Modules

Blog

A blog should be a core feature of any website. A blog that is consistently updated with fresh, original content will go a long way towards helping your website place well in the major search engines.

Filter

The input filter allows you to specify what users are allowed to publish. For example, you could set the input filter to disallow any html tags. A more advanced application of the Filter module is to set all links to “no-follow”, which can help the PageRank of your site.

Path

Combined with the 3rd party modules, Pathauto, Token, Path Redirect & Global Redirect, Path allows you to create keyword rich URL aliases. For example, instead of having a URL read “www.leveltendesign.com/node/1457”, it could read, “www.leveltendesign.com/drupal-seo-guide”.

Taxonomy

The taxonomy module allows you to create tags and categories for content. These tags and categories will automatically link out to self-organizing pages, which can show up in search, and will drastically increase your sites page count.

Third Party Drupal Modules

These are some of the most essential 3rd party modules for SEO, broken into several categories.

Statistics & Reporting

Without proper statistics and reporting measures, you’ll be flying blind with your website – you won’t know who’s visiting your site, for how long or why.

Xml sitemap: While the version for Drupal 6 is still in development, this is still a must have module. You can configure Xml sitemap to submit your sitemap to Ask, Google, Windows Live and Yahoo! every time you run Cron on your site.

Google analytics: Installing the Google analytics module makes it easy to insert the tracking code required by Google.

SPAM Control

If you’re going to create a truly interactive site, you need Spam control. Both of these modules will help control or eliminate spam opportunities on your website.

There are a bevy of modules for social media integration on Drupal. These are some of our favorites from a search marketing standpoint:

Link to us: Link to us makes it simple to create banner and text links for your site’s visitors to use when linking to your site. Currently only works with Drupal 5.

Add This: Easily promote your sites content over the major (and minor) social networks.

Twitter: The trendy micro-blogging platform is fully supported in Drupal. This module takes advantage of Twitter’s API to incorporate your latest Tweets into your website.

Search Engine Optimization

Meta tags: The meta tags module allows you to create different meta tags and descriptions for each page (node) of your site.

Page titles: Allows you to specify a different page title for each node on your site. Combined with the tokens module, you can create page title patterns and templates for your entire site.

SEO Checklist: Gives you a basic checklist to follow of SEO best practices for your website.

Other

W3C Compliant Template:

If you’re going to use a template on your site, it’s good practice to be sure it’s W3C compliant – that way you wont have to deal with any major coding mistakes, and your site will play nice with search engine spiders.
